UK CANCER INFORMATION
Under normal circumstances the cells which make up the entire body grow and divide slowly and under strict control which ensures that the number of cells in the body remains the same. Cancer occurs when one cell changes and grows and divides rapidly and out of control. Cell division eventually forms a growing mass of cancer cells which is called a tumour. There are two types of tumour known as benign or malignant. Benign tumours are not normally dangerous and include moles and warts, however, in malignant tumours the cancerous cells are able to spread into nearby organs where they can cause serious damage. Metastasis occurs when cancer cells travel around the body through the blood vessels and eventually begin to divide and grow again in a new part of the body forming a new secondary tumour or metastases.
CANCER INFORMATION : MISDIAGNOSIS
Medical science has revolutionised this condition in recent years and early diagnosis often leads to full recovery. If the illness is not diagnosed promptly or there is negligent treatment resulting in unnecessary suffering then compensation may be payable for the worsening of the illness. Cancer information relating to the main sources of compensation claims for medical negligence is as follows;
Ovarian
Significant advances in medical knowledge have made effective treatment possible however clinical negligence can lead to a delay in diagnosis which may deprive patients of the chance for a cure.
Breast
This illness often responds well to early cancer treatment, however it may go undetected for months, resulting in serious delay in starting treatment. There are more legal claims arising from this condition than any other disease.
Lung
Detection is carried out by a number of techniques including radionuclide investigations, mediastinoscopy, CAT and MRI scan. Many medical mistakes can lead to a delay in diagnosis including failure to have a biopsy performed and failure to react quickly to biopsy findings.
Cervix
This condition is considered to be a preventable disease because pre-cancerous changes can be detected by smear tests. The tests must however be carried out properly and interpreted by specialists who can then almost eliminate the chances of invasive illness. If detected in its early stages, survival rates are very high with rapid and appropriate treatment.
Prostate
Is the most common carcinoma in men with over 30,000 cases diagnosed each year of which 10% will die from this disease. This carcinoma can now be found by using PSA screening and recovery rates are good if detected at an early stage.
Colon
Is the second leading cause of carcinoma death in the United Kingdom. Misdiagnosis usually results from a failure to properly evaluate complaints of rectal bleeding.
